This is a false assumption
Story
When Cardinal Lawrence is tasked with presiding over one of the world’s most secretive and ancient events, choosing a new pope, he finds himself at the center of a conspiracy that could shake the very foundations of the Catholic Church. Based on Robert Harris’ 2016 novel The Conclave. Cardinal Benitez delivers his culminating speech in Spanish. It is a bit difficult to believe that all the other cardinals can easily understand him. All the cardinals are fluent in Latin by default, and many speak Italian in other conversations in the film.
a movie for adults
All of these languages belong to the Romance language family, so it’s not a stretch to assume that most cardinals would have a basic understanding of Spanish. Sister Agnes: Although we sisters are supposed to be invisible, God has given us eyes and ears.. Reference to Saad Truth: My Review of Conclave (Film) – Wokeism Destroys Everything (2024). And now… Based on Robert Harris’ The 2016 novel CONCLAVE takes viewers to the Vatican during the College of Cardinals’ the selection process of the new pope…filled with political battles, twists and turns and surprises.
This is partly due to the great, fine actors cast in this film
And… if the theater where I attended the show is any indication…" Adults" flock to this movie. Directed by Edward Berger (ALL SILENCE AHEAD OF THE WEST), CONCLAVE moves forward briskly, unraveling a mystery – not a "whodunnit" but "who will get it" – and it gets surprisingly tense. Ralph Fiennes (Voldemort in the HARRY POTTER films) anchors the action as "Dean" Cardinals, tasked with leading the disparate group of cardinals to unanimously choose the next pope. He acts as much detective as facilitator, struggling with his convictions…and ambitions…while uncovering the schemes and plots of some of the “humble servants”.
apply for the highest position
Capably assisted by John Lithgow, Isabella Rosellini and many others (mostly unknown) fighting for "pole position" in the race for the next pope. Special mention goes to the GREAT Stanley Tucci for his support as one of the contenders whose platform seems to be "I don’t want it" but who underneath really, really wants it. Don’t be surprised if both Fiennes and Tucci (as well as director Berger) are mentioned during the Oscar nominations (they’re that good). As mentioned above, this movie has an abundance of twists and turns and it’s fun to ride those twists, but to be honest, I felt like this movie went "one turn too far" and should/could have ended 10 minutes before it ended (no last turn). Now, some would say that this final twist is the point of the movie, but…I’d be fine if it wasn’t.
